In 1974, a flag was raised to mark the debut of The Woodlands, a new hometown. George Mitchell founded The Woodlands with the vision of preserving the natural forested environment and allowing residents to live, work, learn, and play. Cynthia Woods Mitchell cut the Grand Opening ribbon that special morning.The Woodlands started as a risk. It was 27 miles north of downtown Houston, surrounded by a forest, with no employment or shopping nearby. It was new and unique to have a totally integrated hometown back then.There are over 118,000 people living in The Woodlands today. The Woodlands is home to nearly 2,200 businesses and corporations, including several Fortune 500 headquarters. Mitchell wanted to create 1.5 jobs per household in The Woodlands. It’s been a focus for Howard Hughes Corporation for a while, and it’s still a focus as the community grows.
